The Rule of Life
A structure that enables us to say yes to the process of spiritual transformation day in and day out.

Scripture

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”

-Matthew 22:37

Message

How do I want to live so that I can be who I want to be?  In many areas of our lives, we set our intentions.  The Rule of Life is a process of setting intentions for spiritual transformation.  When writing your personal plan, you should take into account: your personality, spiritual type, the season of your life, the sin patterns that you are contending with, and the places where you know God is trying to stretch you. Your plan needs to be personal, realistic, balanced (with things that come easily vs. things that will stretch you), and flexible.

Going Deeper

Begin developing a plan

  • Attend to your desire – Ask: what words, phrases, prayers seem to most consistently capture your sense of longing for God and for spiritual transformation as you are experiencing it these days?  What do you sense is most needed?
  • Acknowledge to God your desire to make yourself available to Him in a consistent way so that He can do His transforming work in you.
  • Listen to which ways have been most life giving to you.  Which spiritual practices and relationships seem to be most powerful in fulfilling the desires of your heart right now?
  • What are you beginning to understand about your minimum daily/weekly/monthly/yearly/ requirements for ongoing spiritual formation?
  • Ask God for His guidance in putting together a rhythm of spiritual practices that will meet your desire for life-giving connection with Him. (refer to Websites 2-8)
  • How will you incorporate these into the rhythm of your spiritual practices?
  • How will you need to adjust your schedule in order to consistently choose this plan?
  • What arrangements do I need to make with those I live with?
  • After writing a plan, does it look and feel personal, realistic, balanced?

Prayer

Lord,

I desire to create space for Your transforming work in my life.  I am willing to arrange my life to embrace it.  Help me! I want to belong to You and I want my life to reflect Your Presence.  In Jesus name,  Amen
