Reformation Day!

This week, we celebrate the time of the Reformation that birthed a new way in the life of the church as Martin Luther, a German Priest, theologian, and teacher, protested against some of the authority and practices of the Catholic Church. The term “soli deo gloria” became the summary statement of the Protestant Reformation.

The phrase is Latin for “glory to God alone,” one of three (or five) principles of the Reformation: Sola scriptura (scripture alone), Sola fide (faith alone), Sola gratia (grace alone), Solus Christus (Christ alone), and Soli deo Gloria (glory to God alone).

Although there were other church reformers before Martin Luther, he is credited with igniting the flame that would become the raging fire of the Reformation. Luther taught that grace is a free gift from God that believers receive through faith. Luther’s translation of the Bible, with help from others, into German, helped to bring the words of scripture to everyday people by making it easier to read and understand. Luther’s influence on Christianity and Protestantism is still felt today. We celebrate one hundred and twenty-nine years as Dr. Martin Luther Church, named for the theologian and teacher who brought the Bible and a new way of faith to believers.

See you in church!
