The Lord Watches Over Us
Whenever I travel, I begin my journey with a prayer. A prayer for safety and a prayer for those I am traveling with, or for those whom I will meet when I arrive at my destination.
Psalm 121 is sometimes referred to as the “Traveler's Psalm” because it expresses trust in God as one who watches over us as we travel. Psalm 121 begins with a question and a declaration of faith by the psalmist:
I lift up my eyes to the hills—
from where will my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
On this trip to Iceland, I was able to travel along the roads leading to the town of Grindavik, which had been closed periodically since late 2023 due to the volcanic eruptions. The eruptions closed the main road, with the molten lava coming perilously close to the Blue Lagoon several times.
The road to Grindavik had to be rerouted around the cooled lava. Today, when I was driving, I thought about all those times when something gets in our way, and we have to “recalculate.” Remember that, regardless of all the times we have to find a new way, God is there with us along every step of the journey.
See you at church!
