Winter Olympics!

During the Children’s Message this past Sunday, I asked the kids which Winter Olympic events they had been watching. Their answers ranged from downhill skiing and figure skating to hockey, curling, and snowboarding.

Living in Wisconsin, we have many unique connections to these athletes. For example, 21-year-old speedskater Jordan Stolz from Kewaskum was inspired to skate after watching short-track events. His father even cleared a pond near their home so Jordan and his sister could practice, starting his journey on hockey skates.

I also enjoy cross-country skiing. Gus Schumacher, who recently won a medal in the Sprint Relay with Ben Ogden, visited Wisconsin in 2023 and 2024 to work with youth and adult skiers at Lapham Peak. His involvement with the Peak Nordic team may be the catalyst for them to pursue their own Olympic dreams. It was inspiring to watch Gus interact with our local skiers; he is incredibly encouraging, taking the time to explain drills and skiing alongside them to offer guidance.

We can learn a great deal from these Olympians, as well as their parents, coaches, and teammates. They remind us of the importance of inspiration, support, and mentorship. No matter our individual goals, there are always others to join us in our endeavors. In this way, the congregation of Dr. Martin Luther Church is like a team, where everyone has a place to share their unique gifts and talents.

See you in church!
