Reciting a Different Creed
This summer, Dr. Martin Luther Church will be reciting the Nicene Creed as our Confession of Faith. If you grew up in a Mainline Protestant or Catholic Church, you are most likely familiar with the Nicene Creed. This past week, Pastor Gary introduced, or reintroduced, the Nicene Creed to those gathered for worship.
In his sermon on Holy Trinity Sunday, Pastor Gary shared a little bit about the Liturgical Church Year, and that during the Season of Pentecost, the focus shifts from the life of Christ to the life of the Christian. Pastor Gary said, “What does it mean for us to be the hearers and the doers of the word of God?”
It is fitting, then, that we think about what it means for us to recite the words of a Confession of Faith each time we worship. A creed is a symbol, a statement of the shared beliefs of a community, which summarizes its core principles.
One of the most important aspects of the Nicene Creed is the recitation of the gathered community for their life together, as Pastor Gary said, “It’s a statement of consensus” in what we believe.
