ELCA Presiding Bishop Installation
The Rev. Yehiel Curry will be installed on Oct. 4 in Minneapolis as the next presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
Curry is replacing Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, who was first elected as ELCA presiding bishop in 2013 and then reelected to serve a second six-year term in 2019. It was a historic day in the life of the ELCA, as it elected its first woman bishop. Presiding Bishop Curry’s election is even more groundbreaking, as he is the first person of color to hold the position.
Bishop Eaton saw four emphases fundamental to identifying who the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is.: We are church; We are Lutheran; We are church together; We are church for the sake of the world.
Each week, when we confess our faith in the words of the creed, we make a declaration that we believe we are part of the greater church. Lutherans see the confessions as powerful tools for proclaiming and defending the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our “confessing” creates unity among Lutherans and the greater church, around a shared conviction about the meaning of God's Word.
We celebrate with Presiding Bishop Curry for his installation, and thank the outgoing Presiding Bishop Eaton for her years of service to the church. Thanks be to God!
See you in church!!
